Going to great lengths to help

Worcester Editorial 7th Oct, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A KIND-HEARTED grandson is taking on an ultimate swimming challenge of 500,000 meters in one year in honour of his nan.

George Bell, a student at University of Worcester, is aiming to raise £2,000 for Breast Cancer Care, who helped his grandmother through her treatment.

The 22-year-old started his task on August 20 and needs to swim 1,666 lengths of a standard 25 metre pool every month. He needs to raise 10p per length to reach his fund-raising target.

He said the organisation helped his grandmother and his family get through the emotional impact of having a loved diagnosed with cancer.

She is now in remission and is not receiving any treatment.

George said: “It’s great that the care they gave us had a successful outcome and all the work they have done came to something good. They provided more pastoral care to us rather than just the clinical.

“They really helped her with the emotional side of it, how to deal with it and how it might effect her mentally.

“It is such a good cause I just want to give back to them for all they have done for us.

“There are occasions when I worry that I won’t be able to do it. It’s a lot to fit in around studying and working for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, but if it was easy no one would donate.”

So far George has raised £475, already making a huge dent in his goal with ten months still to go.
