Giving back to cancer charities

A CITY woman is hoping to give something back to two charities who are helping her mother-in-law through her courageous battle with cancer.

Vicky Davis, of Back Lane South, has organised a charity evening to raise funds and thank Macmillan Cancer Support and St Richards Hospice for the ‘amazing’ support they have given Stephanie Tarplee.

The 63-year-old, who lives in Debdale Avenue, was diagnosed with cervical cancer on May 19 after she went to the doctors to have an operation to remove scar tissue which remained from a previous incident more than 20 years ago.

Vicky told The Observer Stephanie had been a mother figure to her but admitted there had been many occasions where she had hit ‘rock bottom’.

“Since the diagnoses she has been filled with ‘possibles’, ‘ifs and buts’, ‘this treatment’, ‘that treatment’,” the 24-year-old said.

“She came to terms with one treatment plan and then the next day it had all changed.

“She even had her hair cut short because she was advised she was going to lose it all and went and ordered a wig, which was one of the worst bits of information she came to terms with.

“Since being diagnosed in May I think she’s hit rock bottom on more than one occasion.”

The event will be held at the Pershore Workman’s Club, in the town where Stephanie grew up, on Friday, November 28 and will see live music, a raffle, tombola and a buffet which will all aim to raise £1,000 for the charities.

It will run from 8.30pm onwards.

“Stephanie has had so much help and support from both family and friends, but also from St Richard’s Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support,” Vicky added.

“I truly feel that without the support of these two charities this situation we are in now may have been completely different.

“Please all feel free to come along and show your support for both my mum and the two charities.”

Tickets cost £3 and will be available on the door.
