Get swept, is fire chiefs' advice

Worcester Editorial 11th Dec, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

FIRE chiefs have urged residents who use a real fire or woodburning stove to make sure their chimneys are swept regularly.

As the cold nights draw in Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) issued the reminder as past of its Winter Safety Campaign, in a bid to address the devastating impact a chimney fire can have on a home and those living there.

Station Commander Alan Haley said: “With the weather getting colder, more and more people will be lighting fires to keep warm, we do want people to be aware just how damaging they can be.

“A fire in a chimney can all too easily spread into the roof space and to other parts of a property, and can even destroy a home completely.

“The good news, however, is that most chimney fires can be avoided simply by ensuring chimneys are swept regularly and that only the correct fuels are used.”

Recommended tips include always using a fire guard to protect against flying sparks, make sure embers are properly put out before going to bed, keep chimneys clean and well maintained and to make an appointment with a registered chimney sweep if their chimney is due a clean.
