FREE access to tennis courts across Worcester has proved a real hit this summer.
In partnership with Freedom Leisure, Worcester City Council made courts at Cripplegate Park and Gheluvelt Park available for free use during set times over five weeks – from July 16 to August 13.
The scheme saw an impressive 94 per cent uptake, with 363 of the 385 available court hours booked.
Coun Jabba Riaz, deputy leader and chair of Worcester City Council’s communities committee, said: “It has been great to see so many people making the most of the free tennis courts.
“We hope the scheme has inspired people to pick up a racket for the first time or rediscover their passion for the sport.
“It’s brilliant that the free tennis scheme has seen an increase in courts used this year compared to 12 months ago.
“Who knows, perhaps the next generation of tennis stars began their journey this summer on our courts at Cripplegate and Gheluvelt Parks.”
Lisa Kordas, general manager at Freedom Leisure, added: “It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the free tennis sessions this summer, with lots of families getting on court together during the holidays.
“We were pleased to say 2025 was just as popular as 2024 – welcoming back familiar faces and seeing lots of new players too.
“We’re hoping to see these participants again on the Worcester tennis courts very soon.”
