A FORMER member of the European Parliament has been appointed as a non-executive director of the board at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Dr Simon Murphy, who led the European Parliamentary Labour Party for two years comes with a wealth of experience from across the NHS, charities, public-private partnerships and business.

He said: “Worcestershire Acute Hospitals have cared for many members of my family.

“I look forward to playing my part as the trust continues to improve patient care and becomes one of the best places in the NHS for staff to work and develop their careers.”

Trust chairman, Sir David Nicholson, said: “I am delighted that Dr Murphy will be joining our board at what is an exciting time for health and care services locally.

“Herefordshire and Worcestershire is now an Integrated Care System and Dr Murphy’s wealth of leadership experience and expertise in both the NHS and the charitable sector will no doubt help us to build on the partnership working across our health and care system, which have been particularly strengthened through the pandemic.

“This will ensure that our patients will find it easier to access services, see more joined up care delivery and staff should find it easier to work with colleagues from other organisations.”

Dr Murphy’s appointment by NHS England and NHS Improvement became effective from the start of this month and runs until March 31, 2022.

As a non-executive director he is entitled to receive a remuneration of £13,000 per year in line with NHS guidance.
