Five hopefuls revealed as Worcester Labour moves closer to General Election choice

Worcester Editorial 26th Oct, 2022   0

CANDIDATES to be Labour’s candidate for Worcester at the General Election have revealed themselves as party chiefs finalise the list to be put before local members.

Roh Yakobi, Mark Williams, Coun Jabba Riaz, Mike Crofts and Tom Collins are the five names so far who have confirmed their intention to stand though the final list is yet to be announced.

Once the ‘longlist’ of candidates is announced, party members will vote for who they wish to represent Labour at the poll as the party seeks to regain the city seat held between 1997 and 2010 by Mike Foster.

Worcester Labour Party had endorsed all-women shortlists following the 2010 election defeat in a search for a candidate and has been represented at the last three General Elections by former councillor Joy Squires and current party leader at the Guildhall, Coun Lynn Denham.

While the next election doesn’t have to take place until January 2025, newly-elected Prime Minister Rishi Sunak could call a General Election at any point if he chooses to seek his own mandate from the British people.

A vote of no confidence in the Government could also trigger a poll but this would require a majority of the House of Commons, which currently had a Conservative majority of 71, to vote against the Government.
