MORE than 100 athletes took part in the University of Worcester’s first major triathlon event.

The university’s Lakeside Campus – the former Top Barn Activity Centre – hosted the recent event as part of the Worcester Triathlon Clubs’ annual test of endurance.

Competitors tackled a 1,500m open water swim in the freshwater lake at the site, a 60km bike ride around country lanes and a 10km off-road run.

George Kirkman was the first male to finish in a time of two hours 46 minutes and Jenny Latham was the first female to cross the line, in two hours 58 minutes.

Dr Susie Hart, director of sport partnership and community engagement at the university said: “In just 15 weeks, the university has begun to transform the site, bringing the main lake under operational management and extracting 90 boat-loads of weed in the process.

“Community engagement is also underway, with Worcestershire Scouts, Kidderminster College, Nunnery Wood Football Club, Teme Valley Triathlon Club and Worcester Triathlon Club already training at the site weekly. They are the first of many community groups visiting and engaging in activities at our Lakeside Campus.”
