AN ARTIST’S impression of ambitious plans for a new church and community centre in the heart of the city has been revealed.

Planning permission was granted in June for HOPE Church to convert the former Granary in St Martin’s Quarter into a church, community centre and cafe.

Built in 1870 the derelict building, which has lay empty for years, is set to be given a new lease of life in order to provide a space that ‘serves the city’.

Richard Thomas from the HOPE Church, told the Observer: “We want the building to be a resource for the city.

“We want to think about what it can do for the city and we have started to explore that concept, for example, the space can be used by businesses, the art community, social services or the NHS, it is not just a church.

“We are bringing together a detailed plan which we will submit to Worcester City Council in the next few months.

“If we get fully funded, it would be a two year building project. If anyone is interested in investing in this project, please let us know.”

The project comes after a £75 million revamp of Lowesmoor site, which was formally launched with the arrival of supermarket giant ASDA in March 2012.

High profile names such as Costa Coffee, Ladbrokes, Sports Direct and B+M Stores have all taken their place in the last four years.
