First glimpse of how the new pool may look

THE FIRST artist’s impression of the city’s proposed new £10.4million swimming pool has been revealed.

Worcester City Council released the image of the eight lane pool last week as work on the design picks up pace.

The project was backed by the city council in September and will see Perdiswell Leisure Centre extended to accommodate the 25 metre pool and seating for 250 spectators.

A funding package is currently being put together by council bosses which is set to include borrowing and grants from external sports bodies.

A contractor is also likely to be appointed by July 2015 as the council bids to get the pool up and running by 2016.

Coun David Wilkinson, cabinet member for Safer & Stronger Communities, said: “It’s very exciting to see this first design for the pool’s entrance.

“It shows that we’re making good progress on our aim of giving Worcester the pool it deserves.

“I’m sure people across the city will be as excited as I will be to see the final designs when they are ready in a few months.

“The new pool will appeal to our city’s learners, families and dedicated swimmers alike and will also host national and regional competitions, turning Worcester into a top swimming destination.”

Members of Worcester Swimming Club have previously spoken of their delight at seeing the scheme go ahead as it will be able to host regional competitions.

The development will also provide confidence water for toddlers as it will feature a 18m x 10m learner pool with a moveable floor to allow a variety of uses.

The existing sport hall at Perdiswell Leisure Centre will be refurbished once the new pool is completed, while 120 gym stations and a café will be created.

But work is currently underway to finalise the design, apply for planning permission and recruit a leisure partner to run the new complex off Bilford Road as well as other sport and leisure centres on the council’s behalf.
