First arrivals at Parkway at the end of the year

THE FIRST trains to serve the new multi-million pound Worcestershire Parkway station are set to stop at the site at the end of the year, county chiefs have revealed.

Worcestershire County Council bosses revealed the station is expected to open during towards the end of the year with passengers being able to access services on the North Cotswold and Cardiff to Gloucester to Birmingham lines which intersect at the station.

Work on the main station building is now nearing completion and the first of the three, 265 metre long platforms which each being built in sections onsite are being manoeuvred into place.

A pedestrian bridge providing access to the platforms is in place, the new highway roundabout has been installed and opened to through traffic and work is well underway on the 500 space car park and access road.

Cabinet member for Economy and Infrastructure, Coun Ken Pollock said: “Every time I visit the site I am amazed at the progress being made.

“With the main station building now being fitted-out and the opening date expected late this year, the goal of trains stopping at Worcestershire Parkway Station is now in sight”.

Construction on the station is set to be completed in the summer and once finished it will be inspected and tested before being handed over to Great Western Railway, who will operate and manage the station, and Network Rail who will manage the rail infrastructure.

Great Western Railway services operating between Hereford/Great Malvern/ Worcester and the Thames Valley and London Paddington via stations including Pershore, Evesham, Oxford and Reading will call at the station along with services between Cardiff and Nottingham.

Trains operated by Cross Country between Cardiff and Nottingham via stations including Gloucester Central, Cheltenham Spa, Ashchurch for Tewkesbury, Birmingham New Street and Derby and which do not currently stop at Worcester stations will call at the new station from opening.
