BUSINESSMEN and women set the wheels in motion ahead of the one of the biggest sporting events to be held in the county when they took to the basketball court.

Twelve teams from eight businesses from across Worcestershire took part in the Workplace Challenge Wheelchair Basketball Competition on Wednesday, August 12.

The event, which was run by the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, was held in honour of the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, which will take place in Worcester later this month.

Johnsons Coaches were crowned champions while Bromsgrove District Housing Trust headed home with the Fair Play Trophy for showing great sportsmanship and endeavour.

Jo Richards, development director of British Wheelchair Basketball, said she was delighted to see so many people try out the Paralympic sport.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we have received from the Worcestershire community over the past few months,” she said.

“We hope to see all those who have caught the wheelchair basketball bug come along to support the GB Teams at the European Championships at the end of the month.”

Mark Martin, director of One Creative and chair of WLEP Business Board, said the event was great for team building, motivation and improving people’s health.

“What you noticed at the beginning of the evening was fear and trepidation mixed with excitement on many of the participants’ faces,” he said.

“People were of various fitness levels and many had never played basketball let alone sat in a wheelchair before.

“The wheelchairs were a great leveller in people’s ability and performances which made the night more fun for everyone.

“As the night went on you noticed people didn’t want to get out of the chairs and that everyone had a smile on their face.”

He added: “It was also helpful to highlight the forthcoming European Wheelchair Basketball Championships at the Arena at the end of the month.

“Another major sporting event that will be great for the city and its economy. I hope many local businesses will get behind and support the event by taking on some of the corporate hospitality still available for their staff and clients.”
