Filipino community are having a ball

THE CITY’S Filipino community are set to have a ball at a Worcester school when they go up against each other in a new basketball tournament.

Mayor of Worcester Coun Alan Amos launched the Winter Basketball League last week on behalf of the Worcestershire Filipino International Community.

The league, which will be held at Bishop Perowne CE College every Sunday, is open to everyone who wants to play basketball.

But Coun Amos said he hopes the city’s Filipino community, which is understood to be between 500 and 700, will see it as an opportunity to get together and have fun.

“I felt very athletic tossing the ball to start the first game of the tournament – then I quickly got out of the way,” Coun Amos said.

“Basketball is tremendous fun to watch – it’s such a fast-moving, all-year-round sport, and a good alternative to football. I was made to feel really welcome at the event.”
