Festive lunch for city's homeless

Worcester Editorial 9th Dec, 2016   0

HOMELESS and disadvantaged people from across the city have been invited to a festive lunch being hosted by Mayor of Worcester Coun Paul Denham.

The Mayor is hoping to spread some Christmas cheer by hosting the lunch in the Guildhall on Tuesday (December 13).

Coun Denham has worked with the YMCA, St. Paul’s Hostel, Maggs Day Centre, CCP, Citizen’s Advice Bureau and the Foodbank to help invite guests to the event.

“Every year the Mayor of Worcester holds a banquet, but this year I wanted to help those who are struggling to put food on their tables, keep warm or even have a roof over their head,” he said.

“This is just one small gesture, and I don’t pretend that it will resolve the complex problems which many homeless people face.

“However, I hope it will spread some good cheer and encourage others to take practical action to help the homeless and disadvantaged in Worcester,” he added.

The guests will be treated to a traditional Christmas lunch with Waitrose’s new Worcester store donating all the vegetables and Christmas puddings for the meal, and the turkey with all the trimmings will be paid for from the Mayor’s budget.

Staff from YMCA will cook the lunch.

Anyone who is concerned about someone sleeping rough in the city can report them through our Streetlink service on 0300 500 0914 or at www.streetlink.org.uk.

A support worker will attend the reported spot within 24 hours of referral.
