Festival offers packed programme

Worcester Editorial 17th Aug, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A LIVELY celebration of the city and its people kicked off on Saturday with the opening of the annual Worcester Festival.

City Mayor Coun Paul Denham officially opened the annual event outside the Guildhall on Saturday (August 13) before the Gugge 2000 band get proceedings under way in their own inimitable way.

This year’s 17 day programme includes walks, talks, workshops, exhibitions, arts and crafts, markets, treasure trails, live music, tours, performances and open days.

Competitions, classes and more will be provided at venues across the city before the explosive firework finale on August Bank Holiday Monday (August 29).

Organisers are also promising a great range of children’s events perfect for keeping the whole family entertained over the summer holidays.

A fantastic family prize quiz trail is back for the second year running, as is the CrownGate Percy Trail – look out for Percy’s face in shop windows throughout CrownGate to find out more.

Festival director Chris Jaeger said: “This is always an incredibly exciting time of year.

“There are so many things to see and do – the range and diversity of events is something that we’re really proud of.

“With around 400 events taking place in more than 30 venues across the city, there really is something for everyone.

“Even better – most of the events are completely free. We really hope as many people as possible come along and get involved.”

As always, the festival will come to an end with a bang with the St Richard’s Hospice Fireworks, a great finale to the fortnight’s celebrations on August Bank Holiday Monday (August 29).

There will be entertainment down on South Quay from 9pm before the display begins at 10pm.
