Fans praise city pub's stance over shirt slogan

A WORCESTER pub has thanked locals and Liverpool fans from around the world for their support after a drinker was thrown out for wearing a T-shirt mocking victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

Staff at the Brewers Arms on Comer Road have been inundated with support from city residents and Liverpool fans after the incident on Sunday (May 29).

A man was pictured wearing the black T-shirt as he sitting in the beer garden of the Brewers Arms in St John’s.

The T-shirt featured a comment about the tragedy in which 96 football fans died at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in April 1989.

Brewers Arms landlord Mark Daniels confirmed to The Observer a customer was ejected when the T-shirt was spotted.

Following the incident, Paul Grange, 50, from Worcester, was charged on Monday (May 30) with a Section 5 Public Order Offence relating to the display of threatening and abusive sign and writing, likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

He has been bailed and will appear at Worcester Magistrates’ Court on Friday, July 8.

Staff at the pub were quick to take to Facebook to apologise for the incident, which comes just a month after an inquest ruled the 96 who died on the day were ‘unlawfully killed’.

“As soon as it was brought to the attention of the management he was removed, quite hurriedly by the landlord,” the statement read.

A number of comments have been left on the pub’s Facebook page since the incident including many from grateful Liverpool fans.

One read: “Thank you for standing up for decency, I hope that your business continues to flourish.

“You will be remembered for your actions by decent people everywhere.”

Another said: “This pub and landlord has a strong moral character by getting rid of the guy wearing that disgusting T-Shirt- nothing but respect.”

And one man who was at Hillsborough on the day of the disaster left a comment which said: “To Mark and all the team at the Brewers for behaving impeccably when one of your ‘customers’ behaved disgracefully.

“From a Liverpool fan who was at Hillsborough I can’t thank you enough,” he added.

A later post from management at the Brewers Arms read: “A huge thank you from all of us here at the Brewers Arms for the support we have received.

“Again we acted as any decent human being should. Our heart goes out to all the victims and their families,” the pub added.
