Familiar face helps mark anniversary

Worcester Editorial 2nd Oct, 2017   0

ONE OF the UK’s leading actors visited staff and volunteers at a Worcester charity shop to celebrate its first anniversary.

Robert Daws, known for his roles as Dr Gordon Ormerod in The Royal and Dr Choake in Poldark, visited the hard-working team at Barnardo’s, St Martin’s Quarter, last Friday, to mark a year since the store opened its doors.

The store has received more than 1,100 bags of donations since opening, with its 14 volunteers, aged from 16 to 70, giving more than 1,800 hours of their time to help with sorting the stock and serving customers.

Mr Daws has also featured in Roger Roger and Outside Edge, and has just starred in Alan Ayckbourn’s comedy How The Other Half Loves alongside Caroline Langrishe, Matthew Cottle, Sara Crowe and Charlie Brooks.

“It’s always a pleasure to meet staff and volunteers who work so hard to raise so much money for charity,” said Mr Daws.

“I’ve seen for myself the difference which Barnardo’s makes to families, transforming young people’s lives and offering a more positive future.

“I hope people will continue to support the charity’s stores in Worcester and around the UK, so that this vital work can be maintained,” he added.

Sarah Woodward, manager of the St Martin’s Quarter store, said: “We’re delighted Robert was able to join us to celebrate the first anniversary of our store.

“We have a fantastic team of dedicated volunteers who work incredibly hard in support of Barnardo’s. There’s a great atmosphere and we have lots of fun together.

“Thanks to the generosity of our donors and shoppers, we’ve been able to raise much-needed funds to support the charity’s work with some of the UK’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people.”

The store is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
