RIGHT Royal celebrations will be held across Worcester to mark the King’s Coronation in style, with a weekend packed with celebration.
Bunting and flags will add a splash of colour to streets across the city as friends, neighbours and communities gather to mark the occasion with picnics and street parties.
The Guildhall will be lit up in red, white and blue and – in partnership with Worcester BID (Business Improvement District) – the City Council will be brightening up the city centre with colourful bunting which will remain in place throughout the summer. Local shops and businesses have been encouraged to decorate their windows with a Coronation theme too.
The Coronation will be shown live on a big screen in Cathedral Square between 10am and 3.30pm on Saturday, May 6. People wishing to attend are reminded to bring their own chairs along.
The Guildhall will also be showing the Coronation on a big screen in the Lower Hall between 10am and 4pm. People are welcome to take along food and soft drinks.
Coronation souvenirs including mugs, teatowels, bunting and flags are already on sale at Worcester Tourist Information Centre in the south wing of the Guildhall. The TIC will be open on Coronation Day and on Bank Holiday Monday between 10am and 4pm.
Also on Saturday, May 6, between 9am and 5pm, Cotswold Markets Ltd will be holding their monthly food and craft market on the High Street.
More than 20 street parties are being held throughout the weekend and the village of Claines is to hold its own celebration at the recreation ground in Cornmeadow Lane.
The Claines Community Coronation Celebration will be held between 2pm and 5pm on Sunday May 7 and will include a fancy dress parade plus games and activities for children as well as live music, street food, a barbecue and cakes and sweets. There will also be a bar, various stalls and a picnic area.
Sunday, May 7 will see the Coronation Big Lunch staged at venues across the country. Mayor of Worcester, Adrian Gregson is to host Worcester’s Coronation Big Lunch at the Guildhall at midday.
Around 100 nominated guests from local charities and volunteering groups have been invited to the buffet lunch in the magnificent Assembly Room. Guests will include volunteers from the
Mayor’s two charities, Onside Advocacy and Severn Arts. Around 20 civic guests, including the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, will host the tables. All invitees will be presented with a civic gift from the Mayor.
At 4pm on Sunday, May 7 there will be a special Coronation Evensong service at Worcester Cathedral. A civic procession consisting of councillors, the Mayor of Worcester, former mayors and aldermen will make its way from the Guildhall to the Cathedral for the service.
Monday, May 8 will see thousands of people across the country take part in The Big Help Out. Worcester Cathedral is inviting local residents to drop into the Cathedral between 11am and 2pm to meet its volunteers and to find out more about how they can get involved.
