A POPULAR children’s book series will be brought to life by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust in a bid to encourage children to get closer to wildlife.

Young explorers will have the chance to join characters Wilfred and Primrose from the popular series Brambly Hedge by Jill Barklem on a wild adventure around Lower Smite Farm in Worcester on Wednesday, April 6 to take part in a scavenger hunt and walking trail.

The books, originally published by Collins in 1980, are based on the lives and adventures of a community of mice who live in Brambly Hedge. The trust is running outdoor activities based on the ‘Spring Story’ chronicle, aimed at ages five to 12, where children can explore the miniature world of Brambly Hedge and catch a glimpse of the characters embarking on their intrepid expeditions.

They will then prepare a wild picnic in the spring sunshine for Wilfred Toadflax’s secret birthday celebration before taking part in small mammal trapping in the hope of finding the Brambly Hedge mice in their natural habitat.

Hannah Thomas, trust engagement officer, said: “There is a huge variety local wildlife to be found in the fields and hedgerows and this variety only increases as the seasons change. With spring on the horizon, now is the perfect time to get out and explore the wonders of the great outdoors.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for children to appreciate the local countryside and make new friends whilst focusing on a literary classic that brings an educational element to our activities.”

Wilfred and Primrose’s Wild Adventure will be from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesday, April 6. It costs just £3.50 per child to attend and booking is essential on 01905 754919.
