Elephant parade's first backer revealed

Worcester Editorial 22nd Oct, 2020   0

THE FIRST sponsor to get on board with Worcester’s second, spectacular, public art trail has been announced.

Worcester-based Spontex has pledged to sponsor a beautiful elephant sculpture as part of Worcester’s Big Parade – a Wild in Art event brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice.

For eight weeks during summer 2021 at least 30 beautifully decorated elephants will parade through the city’s streets, parks and open spaces to form a stunning art trail.

Each sculpture will be funded by companies and individuals from around the county and will be brought to life by regional and national artists.

At the end of the project, the sculptures will be auctioned to raise vital funds for the free on-going care and support offered by St Richard’s Hospice for people affected by serious progressive illness and their loved ones.

The project builds on the hugely successful Worcester Stands Tall giraffe trail in 2018, which saw giraffe sculptures displayed across the city before raising £210,000 for the hospice at auction.

Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager at St Richard’s, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to announce Spontex as our first sponsor for Worcester’s Big Parade.”

“The Spontex team have been hugely supportive of our work at the hospice and even spent a day volunteering on site cleaning windows so our patients could enjoy sparkly, clear views of our beautiful gardens. We are delighted the team are joining us on this next adventure.”

“Next year’s parade is, of course, all the more significant in light of the global pandemic which has seen us staying home more. We can’t wait to bring a parade of colourful elephants to Worcester’s iconic attractions, getting us all out and about and enjoying our wonderful city once again.”

Marc Matthews, Managing Director at Spontex, said: “Having seen the great work that St Richard’s do first hand, we knew instantly that we wanted to be a part of Worcester’s Big Parade.”

“We’re so excited to be the first local company out of the blocks and are really looking forward to seeing all of the designs submitted for the Spontex elephant.”

The elephants will be joined by calf sculptures – smaller, but crafted just as creatively, by students and teachers in local schools. The baby elephants will be displayed in the city during the trail which will run from Monday, July 12 to Sunday, September 5 2021.

There is still time to sponsor an elephant. To get involved call 01905 763963 and ask for Sara Matthews, email [email protected] or visit https://worcestersbigparade.co.uk/get-involved/
