Eckington Bridge open after repairs to damage caused by fatal crash

Worcester Editorial 27th Aug, 2023   0

ECKINGTON bridge is now open following a month of repairs after it was damaged last year in a fatal crash.

The bridge’s parapet was raised and the bridge reopened on Monday, four days ahead of schedule.

The Grade II listed monument over the River Avon closed on July 25 for repairs following a crash last summer which saw the death of Worcester father of six Harry Smith.

Works have involved the rebuilding of the safety barrier on the edge of the bridge.

Divers have retrieved sandstone blocks from the river bed and they have now been replaced.

The bridge’s parapet was damaged during an early hours incident in August 2022 which saw a silver BMW and a red Vauxhall Astra collide before the BMW fell into the River Avon.

Harry, 33, was recovered from the water but sadly died at the scene.

Harry’s mum Shirley and her partner Gerry described him as the light of the party who would do anything for anybody.
