Dad and daughter ready for the task

Worcester Editorial 15th Jun, 2018   0

A WORCESTER dad and daughter are among those saddling up to tackle a cycling challenge to raise funds for a local hospice.

Andrew and Abigail Daniels will be taking part in St Richard’s Hospice annual Bikeathon event on July 1 where participants can choose from 16, 45 or 64 miles and hope to raise £1,000 for the charity

Dad Andrew is a keen cyclist and has undertaken a number of charity challenges over the years for the hospice, including taking part in the 2006 London Marathon.

However this will be 13-year-old Abigail’s first long distance cycling challenge

“This is a great challenge for both myself and Abigail and I couldn’t be more proud of her. Her training is going really well and has included a 34 mile, two and a half hour trip to Ross-on-Wye. She’ll be doing 45 miles before we know it,” proud Andrew said.

“We want to do our bit. As a local family, we all know someone who has benefited from the care offered by St. Richard’s Hospice and that’s why we want to get involved.”

“St Richard’s really is an essential resource, and, as such, it needs all the support it can get,” he added.

Each of the routes starts and finishes at the hospice in Wildwood Drive, while the two longer rides will be timed. The courses will all be clearly signposted and will pass through mainly quiet country lanes or specific bike routes with regular refreshment stops along the way.

The 16-mile route passes through villages including Kempsey and Pirton; the 45-mile route takes in Eckington and Pershore and the 64-mile route travels as far as Broadway and Snowshill.

Fund-raiser Kelly Johns said: “We are thrilled Andrew and Abigail will be taking part in our Bikeathon event in July.

“And we are all a little bit humbled by the fact that Abigail is just 13-years-old. Such commitment and focus is to be applauded and we would like to say a very big thank you to them both and wish them all the best on the day.”
