Cow rescue challenge puts crew to the test

FIREFIGHTERS teamed up with Worcester farmers to save a cow which got stuck in deep mud.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service were called to the incident at a field in Spetchley on Sunday, August 2 at 4.30pm.

A crew from Worcester attended alongside a specialist animal rescue rescue unit from Pershore, they found the elderly cow trapped on about one meter of mud.

The farmer managed to clear the field of the other cows and a large bull. The Pershore crew, lead by Commander Justin Challenger, were able to get to the cow using an inflatable platform and secured a safety harness to its head and a strap underneath it.

Rob Adams, a neighbouring farmer, was at the scene throughout and was finally able to pull the cow out of the mud with his telehandler.

Group Commander George Marshall, from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This was a challenging rescue that demonstrated the effectiveness of our animal rescue equipment, training and leadership. A combination of hard work and great teamwork from fire service crews, the owner, and local farmers, resulted in a tired and muddy cow being safely returned to her field, and tired and muddy firefighters being safely returned to their station.

“Everyone should be hugely proud of their actions at this incident and I would like to extend my thanks to everybody involved in what was a job well done.”
