A COUNTY archaeology archive has been named the UK’s best record keeping service for 2017.
Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service recently scooped the ‘Record Keeping Service of the Year’ award at the annual Archives and Records Association (ARA) Excellence Awards, following a public vote.
The Worcestershire County Council service, which is based at The Hive and holds 12 miles of archives dating from the 12th century to modern day, will receive the award at a ceremony later in the year by the ARA’s President, Dr Alexandrina Buchanan.
Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service has 45 volunteers and holds an array important historic artifacts, such as William Shakespeare’s marriage bond.
The service is currently supporting a major exhibition in Lincoln, focusing on the historic 1217 battle between the English and French armies for control of the city.
John Chambers, ARA’s chief executive officer, said: “Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service was the clear winner. It’s not alone in having committed, professional staff in the local government sector that are determined to maintain a quality service to the wider community.
“But its range and depth of activities and success in placing itself at the heart of the culture life of Worcestershire are just two reasons that make the service special.”
Dr Lisa Snook, user services manager at Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service, said: “The winner was determined by the votes of customers of archives as well as archive professionals, so the award is particularly meaningful.
“It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team. We’re committed to ensuring all of our customers receive a great experience of our service.”
