Counting down to big switch on

Worcester Editorial 16th Jan, 2020   0

THE FIRST of four new festivals for the city is counting down to switch on as Light Night Worcester gets set to illuminate the Faithful City.

Organisers the Arches Festivals are getting to set to flick the switch on the event which takes place tonight (Thursday) from 5.30pm to 10pm around the High Street and Cathedral Square.

Light Night Worcester is inspired by the connections we have with each other and the world around us with a programme of stunning light installations created by local and international artists.

Among the highlights are music from Worldbeaters LED drummers, a large colourful umbrella spectacle by worldwide performance producers Cirque Bijou who will be joined by 50 performers form the local community as well as giant illuminated seesaws which make sounds as you bounce by CS Design and Lateral Office with a soundscape by Mitchell Akiyama.

These will be alongside installations from first year students at the University of Worcester and a specially commissioned graduate light-based piece.

Festivals chief David Edmunds, said: “All of the four festivals have all got very strong and distinctive themes and it is great to be able to start sharing more information about them and how each one is going to be brought to life.

“Light Night Worcester has had an incredible response so far and we are excited to see everyone on the evening itself.”

Laura Worsfold, Severn Arts chief executive said: “We are all very excited about bringing new arts experiences to the people of Worcester and in particular, the number of opportunities for young people and new creative businesses that this programme will offer.

“Festivals have a huge impact on cities, as we have seen through City of Culture projects in Liverpool, Hull and now Coventry. We aim to celebrate the uniqueness of Worcester through presenting outdoor spectacle, debate, challenge and innovation and to raise the profile of artists, creative professionals and new emerging talent in our city.”

Peter Knott, area director for Arts Council England said: “This is a transformative time for Worcester, as the Cultural Development fund helps to build on the creativity that’s at the centre of the city’s future development and we are proud to support the city as The Arches – Worcester project gets underway.”
