Councillor’s call for 20mph on Lansdowne Crescent ‘racetrack’ - The Worcester Observer

Councillor’s call for 20mph on Lansdowne Crescent ‘racetrack’

DANGEROUS drivers are using a Worcester road as a ‘racetrack’ according to a concerned county councillor who has repeated his calls for a 20mph limit to be imposed.

Coun Matthew Jenkins, Green Party county councillor for St Stephen, made the claims after a spate of road traffic accidents on Lansdowne Crescent in recent weeks (pictured).

It’s believed all three incidents have been caused by speeding drivers and Coun Jenkins revealed residents’ concerns are growing over the dangerous driving which he says is ‘seemingly being a frequent occurrence on the road’.

“On more than one occasion, speeding cars on Lansdowne Crescent have crashed through the fence and ended up in the allotment,” Coun Jenkins said.

“Drivers are using this road as a racetrack. They are speeding along a narrow road which has a sharp bend.

“New signage and road markings are due very soon, which may help to a limited degree.

“I am also calling for 20mph speed limits for the road. However, I doubt that any amount of improved signage will stop some drivers from speeding.

“Therefore, I have asked highway officers to see what physical infrastructure could be installed to force vehicles to slow down,” he added.

Highways officers from Worcestershire County Council are working with West Mercia Police to tackle the problems and Coun Jenkins has tabled his own solutions to tackle the plague of speeding vehicles to find a tangible and effective solution which will keep both residents and commuters safe.

“Narrowing the road before the sharp bend would force drivers to reduce their speed,” the Green Party chief added.

“This is a residential area with a well-used allotment and a forest school. I am concerned someone will be seriously injured if we don’t find a way to slow drivers down.”
