Councillor’s call for better bus service

A CAMPAIGNING councillor has welcomed to decision by the city’s bus operator to explore a possible bus route to the new St John’s Medical Centre.

Coun Alan Amos told the Observer he was delighted First Worcester managing director Nigel Eggleton had agreed to the request following a recent meeting.

While Coun Amos admitted he would continue his bid for a bus stop close to the medical centre, he said any diversion which would see the number 30 call at the centre itself would be a ‘dramatic and long overdue improvement’, especially for elderly residents.

The meeting between Coun Amos, county councillor for Gorse Hill & Warndon and city councillor for Bedwardine, and Mr Eddleton followed a successful first meeting last December.

Among the issues for debate was a better regulation of buses by the controller at the bus station to try and curb the problems of two or three buses serving the same route arriving together.

“The good news is that the bus company now – at last – has a data system in place so they can monitor individual bus routes and see the actual situation for themselves,” Coun Amos said.

A desire for better access to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital was also raised and Coun Amos said he welcomed the decision, from September, to extend the number 36 to connect Warndon to the hospital and increase the frequency of the 38.

“Whilst there is still a long way to go before we get a service that we can be proud of, we can see that maintaining a constructive dialogue with the bus company certainly delivers results for passengers,” added Coun Amos.

Mr Eggleton said: “Partnerships are key and help us deliver sustainable bus services, meeting the demands of our present customers and also to encourage new people onto buses.

“Congestion remains our greatest challenge, often prohibiting us from providing the reliable and punctual service our passengers expect.

“We look to both the city and county councils as a ‘matter of urgency’ to deal with the traffic hot spots that we’ve highlighted.

“Only by working together can we can make further improvements to Worcester’s bus services,” he added.
