A DEDICATED Bedwardine councillor has proclaimed ‘let there be light’ with the addition of a new lamp in St John’s Churchyard.
Coun Alan Amos, city and county councillor for the Worcester ward, dug deep for £1,500 out of his divisional fund to pay for a brand-new streetlight in the church yard.
The move was close to the heart of Coun Amos who visits the churchyard to tend to the grave of a family member and he told the Observer the site is loved and much-used by the community.
“The light in the church yard has been out of operation for years so I decided to do something about it,” the outspoken councillor said.
“ It was a very costly exercise, but it was worth every penny.
“The old column needed to be completely replaced as did the electrics which had to be connected to a new street light column nearby.
“The area around the church was dark and dangerous for people to walk through at night so I decided to get it sorted. I know it will be much welcomed by local residents.
“Let there be light is perhaps the most apt description of the new item!,” he added.
