Council surplus is welcome £5k for unit

COUNCIL chiefs have presented a cheque for £5,000 to Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven on behalf of the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.

The donation is a surplus from the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management’s metals recycling scheme, which Worcester City Council’s crematorium is part of.

“It is a real privilege for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven Charity to be chosen as one of the beneficiary charities through this scheme,” said Alexandra Craigie, fund-raising manager at the Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven.

“This wonderful contribution will help us to fund the complementary therapies which are offered to patients on a Thursday each week at the Breast Unit, including acupuncture, hypnotherapy and counselling. Thank you for your incredible support.”

The recycling of metals resulting from cremation is only carried out with the written consent of each bereaved family.

Following the cremation of a deceased person, the cremated remains contain metals from the coffin and from orthopaedic implants such as hip and knee replacement joints.

The Institute works with councils across the country, and many charities both nationally and locally have benefitted from its recycling scheme.

Coun Jabba Riaz, Mayor of Worcester said: “We are very pleased to be able to make a contribution to such worthwhile local causes.”
