Council hopes 13 will be lucky for cycle team

STAFF at Worcester City Council will be lacing up their trainers to join thousands of women in the Race for Life.

Worcester City Council has paid for a team of 13 of its employees to enter the event on Saturday (May 30) and Sunday (May 31) at Worcester’s Pitchcroft Race Course.

They will be taking part in either the 5K, 10K or the Pretty Muddy events in a bid to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Last year nearly 3,000 women in Worcestershire took part and managed to raise £162,700 for the good cause and this year organisers hope that an additional 3,600 will enter the Pretty Muddy event and they can tip the scale with extra entries in the other runs.

Kelly Rumble, Cancer Research UK’s Worcester’s events manager, said: “The atmosphere is incredibly supportive and pledging to take part alongside thousands of like-minded women is great motivation.

“Whether you are a running pro or novice every step you take around the course will help bring us one step closer to the day when all cancers are cured.”

According to the council statistics more than half the population will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, but survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s.

Advance research

The money raised through Race For Life allows Cancer UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the Midlands.
