Council chiefs back plans to potentially bring City home

COUNCIL chiefs have given the thumbs up to proposals which could see Worcester City return to land off Parsonage Way.

Members of the City Council’s Policy and Resources committee unanimously endorsed the principle of securing the Blue and Whites a permanent home at a meeting this evening (Tuesday).

Councillors approved a £100,000 cash injection for a feasibility study to see if Parsonage Way could be a permanent home for the club.

City haven’t played in Worcester full time since the final at St George’s Lane in 2013 and committee chairman Coun Louis Stephen offered his support to the proposals.

“This is a decision to spend money on an environmental study and perhaps other work to ensure we can make a final proper decision.”

Coun Lucy Hodgson addressed the meeting as a local resident and local councillor as her Warndon Parish seat boundary borders the proposed site.

“I would urge there is community engagement at all stages because this is a concerned community at the moment,” she said.

“Any plans that are developed must include community involvement. We have got to make sure this is available not just for the football club but for other areas too.”

Coun Roger Knight raised his concerns the proposed rent of £1 per year for five years was low. Council officers confirmed further talks would take place over a profit share should the club become successful.

County council leader and city councillor Coun Simon Geragthy highlighted the proposals were for a football pitch, stand and changing rooms.

All members of the cross-party committee backed the proposals.
