Could England fall victim to the ‘ITV curse’ against Senegal?

Worcester Editorial 30th Nov, 2022   0

ENGLAND advanced to the knockout phases of the FIFA World Cup last night with a 3-0 win over Wales and will meet Senegal on Sunday (kick off 7pm).

A place in the quarter finals will be at stake but Marcus Rashford and the Three Lions face another battle – the ‘ITV curse’.

Since 1998, England have won 12 of their 16 games televised exclusively on the BBC. In comparison it’s just two wins in 15 games when the Three Lions are live on ITV.

Qatar 2022 has seen England win 6-2 and 3-0 on the BBC but draw 0-0 against the United States on ITV.

Should Gareth Southgate’s men defy the ‘curse’ then ITV will have the first choice of the quarter finals, meaning England fans will not see the Three Lions live on the BBC until a possible World Cup semi final.

Four years ago in Russia saw the Three Lions reach the World Cup semi final only to lose 2-1 to Croatia in a game televised exclusively by…..you guessed it, ITV
