Cooking up funding for victims

Worcester Editorial 16th Nov, 2019   0

MAYOR of Worcester Coun Allah Ditta has called on city residents to reach out and help the victims of a 5.8-magnitude earthquake which struck the southern Mirpur district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

At least 125 people, including women and children, died and around 630 others were injured, many of them seriously.

Altaf’s Balti on Tolladine Road is one of many local businesses which rushed to offer support, holding a fund-raising dinner at the restaurant at the end of October.

And now Worcester’s first citizen hopes other businesses and organisations will hold fund-raising events and will even help promote them.

“This terrible earthquake has left devastation in its path, taking lives and destroying homes, businesses and schools, as well as people’s hopes and dreams,” Coun Ditta said.

“Many Worcester residents with Pakistani heritage have friends and loved ones who live in the affected area. I am making a plea to extend the Christmas spirit of peace and goodwill to all mankind. Please, give what you can to support victims of this earthquake.”
