Composer joins up Handel and Gorillaz for special performance

YOUNGSTERS from schools across Worcester are taking part in a mass choir at a National Trust site to celebrate the life and work of the parkland’s famous landscape designer.

Children have been rehearsing for the performance, which takes place this Friday (July 1) at Croome, with composer Chris Long, who has written a song called ‘Mr Capability’ to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of the famous Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

The performance is part of ‘Riversfest’, a one-day festival of songs arranged by Paula Evans, musical director of the Rivers Academy of Schools in Worcester.

Mr Long said: “The style of the song might be described as Handel or Purcell meets Gorillaz. The focus is on how Brown’s example of perseverance and effort in his work can serve as an inspiration to us all, especially to the next generation.

“The children have responded brilliantly and I can’t wait to hear the song performed.”

Ms Evans said: “There will be more than a thousand voices singing and the children will have a wonderful opportunity to share the stage with experienced singers, including the celebrated Warwickshire choir ‘Tarantara’ and the new 40-piece ensemble ‘Vocal High’.”

The event will run from 2pm to 8pm.

Croome’s park and lakeside are open from 10am to 5.30pm and Croome Court is open from 11am to 4.30pm every day.
