Community groups scoop grants

Worcester Editorial 20th Jun, 2017   0

MORE than £370,000 has been donated to five community projects across Worcester by National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund.

Fortis Living, Bishop Perowne CE College, Our Lady Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Worcester Snoezelen and Young Solutions Worcestershire have all received funding from the National Lottery to support their projects.

Fortis Living received the bulk of the funding, with £332,038 going towards the housing association’s South Worcestershire Nightstop and Mediation project, which aims to provide emergency accommodation and support to young homeless people aged 16 to 25.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, in St John’s, received £10,000 towards replacing its kitchen so it can continue hosting community events and activities, whilst £9,800 was given to Bishop Perowne CE College’s Healthy Body, Healthy Mind activity sessions for young people, as well as to train staff in mental health.

Young Solutions Worcestershire received £9,216 towards its Goals for Life scheme, which provides football sessions for young people living with learning disabilities across the city to help promote independence and build self-esteem.

Rounding off the funding with £9,100 was Worcester Snoezelen, which will put the money towards its Interactive Installation programme of digital and engagement activities, that will support disabled people who face barriers in accessing public well-being services.

Across England, 1,903 projects are enjoying a share of more than £50million through the latest round of investment.

James Harcourt, England grant making director at the Big Lottery Fund, said: “It’s great to think that National Lottery players have now raised £36billion for good causes and it’s when you hear about projects like these that you realise the incredible impact funding has had on communities.

“Whether the grant is for £500 or £500,000, our funding is used to run amazing projects led by local people. It really is life changing.”
