A SEARCH and rescue team made up entirely by volunteers who help to find vulnerable missing people has been awarded a £51,000 grant by West Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner.
West Mercia Search and Rescue, who work closely with West Mercia Police, will now be able to expand their operation after receiving the grant from John Campion which will be spread over three years.
The grant will cover the charity’s annual rent and insurance, which was previously paid for by their volunteer members and donations, and allow them to focus their fund-raising efforts on training and equipment.
They will now also use the cash to grow their team to 100 members, recruit and train Community Search volunteers and to create training and logistical bases.
Mr Campion said: “The grant will also have a positive impact on the police service, reducing the workload of officers and allowing them to build on their already strong relationship with the charity.”
Andy MacAuley, Chairman of West Mercia SAR, said: “This grant lifts an enormous burden from our members’ shoulders, by providing us with rent, insurance and utilities for the next three years.”
