Clock ticking on entry to this year's Bubble Rush

Worcester Editorial 27th Jun, 2018   0

A BARBOURNE mum and son who received vital care and support from Acorns Children’s Hospice will start the charity’s foam-filled fund-raising event.

Sarah Cook and her son Luke Tudge will sound the klaxon for Acorns Bubble Rush, which comes to Worcester Racecourse on Saturday.

Bubble Rush is being held to raise money for Acorns Children’s Hospice, towards the charity’s care for life limited and life threatened children and support for their families, across Worcestershire and the Three Counties.

Sarah and Luke will be among the hundreds taking part in the 5km soapy spectacular and are backing the event as a way of ‘giving back’ to the charity and are urging more people to sign up.

“Acorns is the most amazing place. Every little bit of support helps, so please, please get involved in Bubble Rush and have some fun,” Sarah said.

“We’re really looking forward to it. Luke loves anything to do with water and bubbles and this event looked right up his street.”

Luke, who is an Acorns Ambassador, has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy. His condition means that he is unable to speak or walk and is fed through a tube.

The 18-year-old was referred to Acorns for the Three Counties, in Bath Road, at six years old for end of life care. He had gone into liver failure following a reaction to anti-epilepsy medication.

Miraculously, Luke’s prognosis changed and mum Sarah was able to take him home.

Luke, who uses EyeGaze technology to communicate, continued to receive specialist care from Acorns, benefitting from youth groups and respite stays.

“When we were there for what we thought was end of life care, Acorns was a place of security, where we all felt safe. Nothing was too much trouble,” the proud mum added.

“When Luke returned for respite stays and youth groups, we knew that he was completely cared for, that all his needs were met and that he was equally as loved by the staff there as he is by us – you don’t get that anywhere else.

The event will feature merchandise and accessory stalls and entry includes a free Bubble Rush t-shirt and finish line medal.

Sam Greatrex, senior events officer at Acorns, said: “Time is running out for people who want to sign up for this fabulously frothy fund-raiser – online entry closes at midnight tonight.

“It’s going to be a fantastic day full of fun, foam and smiley faces. Don’t miss out!”

In the past year Acorns has provided specialist palliative care to more than 870 children and over 1,090 families, including those who are bereaved.
