Clearing work aims to boost drainage in Worcester and Malvern

Worcester Editorial 11th Feb, 2023   0

GULLY clearing work has started across parts of Worcester and Malvern as part of ongoing efforts to keep almost 120,000 gullies unclogged across the county.

The work, being undertaken by Worcestershire County Council will see gullies cleared out in Brickfields, Tolladine and Gorse Hill, Worcester and Spring Lane South, Cedar Avenue and Malvern Link.

Keeping gullies clear helps to ensure that the overall drainage system will not become blocked. It also helps to reduce the likelihood of flooding and helps surface water drain away quicker.

Coun Mike Rouse, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “Without a doubt, this work has a huge impact on ensuring our road and drainage systems are better equipped to deal with bad weather and heavy rainfall.

“We will be cleansing and inspecting housing estates in Worcester and Malvern; however, we will still attend any reported drainage defects elsewhere in the meantime.

“Once Worcester and Malvern are complete as part of this routine cycle, we will move onto other parts of Worcestershire.

“I know the public are keen to see gullies kept as clear as possible, and that’s why we’ve made it even easier to report issues, and even see when a particular gully was last inspected.’’

Residents can help to keep Worcestershire’s gullies clear by not washing anything down them and keeping them clear of leaves to remove any build-up and help the water drain effectively.

If the gully really is blocked or not working for any reason, then residents can report an issue with a gully by ringing Worcestershire County Council’s Highways call centre or reporting online at Worcestershire.gov.uk/reportIt.

The centre is now open extended hours 7am to 7pm (Mon-Fri) and can be reached by calling 01905 845 676.
