City urged to do more for evening workers

CALLS for a shake-up to protect those who work or use Worcester’s night-time economy have been tabled by a leading Labour councillor.

Coun Richard Udall called upon the City Council to launch an investigation during a meeting of the authority’s Licensing and Environmental Health Committee.

With the prospect of the city’s nightclubs, bars, cinemas, theatres and restaurants returning to normal hours of operation on July 19, Coun Udall hopes more can be done to protect city residents.

“For a long time, I have been worried about the people who work in this sector. It’s mostly un-unionised, low paid, and vulnerable to exploitation,” the St Johns councillor said.

“I want Worcester City Council to consider ways it can learn from other local authority areas to see how we can ensure the night-time economy can become safe for both users and those who are employed in the sector”.

The self-appointed ‘Voice of St Johns’ revealed he has spoken to a number of people who have worked at city centre venues. Among the concerns raised were long hours of work without breaks, low pay, verbal and physical abuse and finding a safe way home after work.

“Many young people and students who live in St John’s tell me getting home safely is their biggest concern. Most venues do not provide any transport for their late-night employees,” Coun Udall said.

“Others tell me they meet in groups and walk home together for safety – we need to do better than this. If we want the economy to work for the people who are employed in the sector, we need to offer more protection”.

“My personal view is we need a fair employment charter which we will ask venues to sign up to, guaranteeing fair pay, regular breaks, safety at work from abuse and offering safe routes home after work.

“We need to work with the industry to see how this can be achieved. We want Worcester to be a better, safe and a fun place for people to work at night”

A City Council spokesman said: “The City Council already works closely with partners including the Police, Trading Standards and Regulatory Services to ensure that Worcester’s vibrant night-time economy is a healthy and safe one for both customers and employees.

“Coun Udall’s request will be considered alongside other aspects of improving the city’s night-time economy.”
