City unites in silent tribute to the fallen

A POIGNANT pause was brought to an end with poppies as Worcester residents gathered in the heart of the city centre on Remembrance Sunday to commemorate a century since the guns fell silent.

Commemorations to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War came to an end as the city paid its respects to the fallen during a series of events during the weekend.

Events were held at The Hive and the city’s Art Gallery and Museum before a beacon was lit at the top of Fort Royal Park as darkness descended.

A cool and breezy Remembrance Sunday saw hundreds of city residents gather opposite the Cenotaph in the grounds of Worcester Cathedral for the Armistice Remembrance service and poppy drop.

The service began at 10am before a wreath-laying at the war memorial which saw tributes placed by dignitaries including city MP Robin Walker, Mayor of Worcester Coun Jabba Riaz and Coun Brandon Clayton, chairman of Worcestershire County Council.

Following the traditional two minute silence at 11am, a poppy drop outside the Cenotaph brought a poignant end to proceedings

A procession to the Guildhall where the Lord Lieutenant and the Mayor of Worcester took the salute as the Remembrance parade marched past brought the curtain down on the city’s main commemorations.

“Words can’t describe the feeling I had walking out of the Cathedral to see thousands of people lining the streets to remember all those who have passed away in the First World War and subsequent conflicts,” Coun Riaz told the Observer.

“The Cenotaph service was a fitting tribute after a beautiful service in the Cathedral. The people of Worcester came together and did the city proud once again.”
