City streets will be full of festive fayre

Worcester Editorial 23rd Nov, 2018   0

ALL THE FUN of the Victorian Christmas Fayre will be on offer as nearly 200 stalls fill the streets of Worcester next week.

Now in its 26th year, the Victorian Christmas Fayre is one of the most prestigious street fayres of its kind in the Midlands. The event regularly attracts more than 100,000 people across the course of the four days, contributing an estimated £7million to the local economy each year.

This year’s extravaganza kicks off next Thursday, November 29 until Sunday, December 2 and Mayor of Worcester Coun Jabba Riaz hailed the fayre as ‘one of the highlights on the calendar’.

“Many of the items sold on the stalls have been made locally; you’re bound to pick up some great Christmas gifts and there’s lots of fun street entertainment too, so come on down,” he said.

Colourful crafts, festive gifts and speciality foods will be on offer as well as Victorian characters in Gin Lane, lofty entertainers on stilts, children carol singing on stage and buskers on every street corner.

The event will be officially opened by the Mayor next Thursday evening when officials and Cathedral choristers will move down the High Street at 5.15pm, arriving at the Cornmarket for 5.30pm.

Carols will be sung by the Worcester Cathedral Voluntary Choir accompanied by the Salvation Army and there will be a short biblical reading and prayer.
