City plays host to Green Party local election launch

THE FAITHFUL City was the venue for the Green Party’s launch of their local election campaign as co-leader Jonathan Bartley visited Worcester.

A total of 55 of the 57 county council seats in Worcestershire are being contested by the party on May 4 as well as all of the district by-elections being fought on the same day.

Candidates will also be on the ballot in the five mayoral elections being held across the country on May 4.

Speaking on his visit to the city, Mr Bartley said Green Party councillors made a difference in their communities wherever they were elected.

“From securing housing for the most vulnerable to championing renewable energy projects, Green councillors improve people’s lives in all sorts of ways,” he said.

“I’m delighted more and more people are finding out for themselves the big difference having Green councillors makes to local communities.

“We’ve enjoyed a string of council by-election successes recently and now we’re fielding a record number of candidates in the May local elections,” he added.

After launching his party’s campaign, Mr Bartley also took time to knock on doors in the St Peter’s area with the party’s candidate Jane Moorhouse.

“The main issues affecting local residents seem to be city centre congestion and the linked lack of investment in public transport and safe walking and cycling routes to school,” she said.

Current Green county councillor, Coun Matthew Jenkins, said: “It’s fantastic that we have almost a complete slate of candidates across the county fielding more candidates than Labour, UKIP and the Lib Dems.

“This gives almost everyone in the county the chance to vote Green, it give everyone a chance to vote for policies to tackle city centre congestion,” he added.
