City falls silent for fallen

Worcester Editorial 11th Nov, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

THE CITY fell silent on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day as hundreds of people lined the streets of Worcester to remember those who had lost their lives in conflict.

Worcester Cathedral was packed with current servicemen, veterans, dignitaries and members of the public as the Dean of Worcester, The Very Reverend Peter Atkinson, led the traditional service followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial.

Standards were then lowered at 11am before a two-minute silence which was ended with the firing of a gun and the sounding of the Last Post.

Wreathes were laid by city dignitaries including Mayor of Worcester, Coun Alan Amos, and city MP Robin Walker.

A number of groups and organisations then took place in a parade through the city centre, while further services and parades took place in St John’s and Claines.

Today (Tuesday), Armistice Day the end of the First World War, was marked with another two-minute silence and wreath laying ceremony at the Cathedral.
