City art project has some lofty ambitions

Worcester Editorial 24th May, 2017   0

A UNIQUE project which will see more than 20 giant giraffe sculptures tower over Worcester residents throughout the summer of 2018 has been launched.

Worcester Stands Tall, a project being run by leading UK public art producers Wild in Art, will see at least 25 individually designed, 2.5 metre sculptures pop up throughout the city’s streets, parks and open spaces for ten weeks from July, to help raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

The sculptures will be brought to life by regional and national artists to create a visually stunning trail of art and at the end of the project, the sculptures will be then auctioned to raise funds for the Wildwood Drive hospice.

Being supported by Worcestershire Ambassadors and CrownGate Shopping Centre and funded by companies and individuals from across the county, the project is set to be the biggest public art event ever seen in Worcester.

The giraffes will be joined by at least 25 smaller baby giraffe sculptures, which will be designed by students across city schools.

Tricia Cavell, fund-raising director for St Richard’s Hospice, said: “We’re really excited at the thought of majestic giraffes set against Worcester’s iconic backdrop.

“We thought these wonderful creatures were a great representation of our city and they will stand tall alongside us to bring colour and vibrancy to Worcester.

“We’re at the beginning of an exciting journey with this project, one which we hope will bring lots of joy and laughter.

“It’ll be an amazing adventure and is hugely important to St Richard’s Hospice.

“We would encourage our corporate supporters to help us make it the most innovative, inclusive mass participation event ever seen in Worcester.”

Sally-Ann Wilkinson, director of Wild in Art, said: “We’re so excited to help deliver an event that will bring art to the streets and public spaces across Worcester.”
