Christmas carol service to celebrate 40th anniversary of Worcester homeless charity

A SPECIAL Christmas carol service will celebrate Maggs Day Centre’s 40 anniversary.

The service, at All Saints Church, Worcester on Sunday December 21, will honour the charity’s origins and the community that helped bring it to life.

It will reflect on the charity’s founding story, celebrate its ongoing work supporting people who are rough sleeping or facing homelessness, and look ahead with hope to the future.

Melissa Blewitt, fundraising, communications and relationships manager at Maggs Day Centre, said: “Returning to All Saints for this service is incredibly meaningful for us. This church was there at the beginning of Maggs’ story, when the community came together in response to John Maggs’ death and chose compassion over indifference.

“Forty years later, the need is still great, but so is the generosity and determination of Worcester. This service is a chance to honour our roots, celebrate the work happening today, and look ahead with real hope as we continue supporting people who need us most.”

Maggs Day Centre began in 1985 following the tragic death of John Maggs, a local man who died alone in a derelict building after years of homelessness. His death prompted a city-wide response, led by local agencies, community leaders and the churches of All Saints and St Nicholas.

All Saints played a pivotal role in shaping the early steering committee and later helped secure the former St Alban’s Church as the first home of the charity. His story remains at the heart of Maggs’ mission: ensuring no one in Worcester is left unseen, unsupported or alone.

The Christmas service, from 3pm until 4.30pm, will weave together the themes of Maggs’ past, present and future through carols, readings inspired by the charity’s history, and a moment of thanksgiving for the many partners and supporters who make the work possible.
