Choristers flip the light fantastic in Shrove Tuesday Cathedral pancake race

‘FLIPPING’ fantastic fun was on offer as Worcester Cathedral celebrated its legendary annual pancake race.

With Shrove Tuesday falling during half-term, the choristers donned their cassocks, grabbed their frying pans and headed to the Cathedral’s medieval cloisters a little early this year.

The relay race over an obstacle course, took place around the cloisters between two teams made up of the two sides of the Cathedral Choir; Cantoris, lead by the Precentor, and Decani, by the Dean.

There were a range of obstacles to contend with, all whilst dressed in cassocks and flipping pancakes along the way.

The teams, each made up of choristers and Cathedral staff, raced around the cloisters to see who can complete the course in the fastest time, without dropping the pancake.

Students from King’s St Albans line the cloisters to cheer them on.

And the victorious team this year was Team Cantoris. It was a sweet victory for the Precentor’s team, coming back stronger from last year’s defeat.

The Precentor, Canon John Paul Hoskins, said: “It was an honour to be on the winning team for my second pancake race as Precentor, following the disappointment of my inaugural race last year.

Decani put up a brave fight, but there can only be one winner on the day. Well done, to all involved!”
