Charity’s quest to turn the city blue

Worcester Editorial 23rd Jan, 2017   0

A RESPECTED Worcester charity has launched a bid for more historic sites across the city to be recognised with blue plaques.

The Worcester Civic Society hopes city residents will aid their quest with suggestions for where the plaques, which serve as historical markers linking the site with a person or event in history, should be sited.

Society members have placed a significant number of blue plaques in the city in recent years including at the Whitehouse Hotel to recognise 150 years since the formation of Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

Civic Society chairman Phil Douce, said: “Worcester is an ancient, historic city with a wealth of important buildings and structures that are a major part not only of the city’s past, but also of its future.

“In recent years we have identified the sites of the old city gates and the homes of notable people who have lived here in past times.

“We would like to place further blue plaques within the city to identify sites where historic buildings and features once stood such as the City Walls or buildings that have been modernised and are no longer used for their original purpose such as the Vinegar Works,” he added.

Anyone with suggestions of suitable sites within the city and its parishes can call Mr Douce on 07760352086 or e-mail [email protected]
