Changes proposed to bin collections in Worcester

Worcester Editorial 10th Jun, 2024 Updated: 11th Jun, 2024   0

WORCESTER city council is planning to start a ‘same material, same week’ bin collection service.

Half of the city currently has waste collected one week and the other half have recycling picked up.

There is more demand on waste collections compared to recycling which means if plans are approved by councillors, the whole city will have waste collected one week and recycling next.

Proposals were considered by the city council environment committee in a recent meeting and have not yet release any feedback.

If approved, then people who usually have recycling collected in the week commencing July 29 will instead have waste picked up.

Lloyd Griffiths, corporate director for operations, homes and communities said: “These changes are required to make our bin collection service more efficient moving forward.

“With a small fleet of waste collection vehicles, providing extra resilience to the service is paramount as extra stress is placed on it by additional homes.

“If one of the collection vehicles has an issue with breakdowns, staffing changes or inclement weather, then it will be easier to cover the workload if all of the remaining vehicles are gathering the same type of waste.

“Due to the imbalance of waste and recycling bins put out for collection and traveling time to disposal facilities, there is surplus capacity on the recycling rounds, whilst waste rounds have minimal capacity.

“The adjustment will also aid the service in readiness for the mandatory introduction of food waste collection 2026.”

For residents impacted by an overflow of recycling – a temporary side waste allowance would be made the following week so that residents could place excess recycling in tied recyclable bags next to their bin, should their recycling bins have reached capacity.

More information on how to obtain the additional bags will be available nearer the time.
