THE FIRST phase of a major refurbishment of Worcester’s Astwood Crematorium and Cemetery has now been completed.

Funeral services were once again held at the venue from last Monday (September 7) following an extensive redesign of the the chapel.

As part of the revamp, new carpeting, seating and lighting, a refurbishment of the woodwork, painting and improvements to audio visual equipment were also carried out.

Coun Andy Roberts, cabinet member for a Clean, Green and Safe City, said: “It was time to make a substantial investment at the Astwood Cemetery, and that is what we have done.

“The works have created a modern, fresh and respectful atmosphere which is critical to delivering the quality of service that families require at such a sensitive time,” he added.

And the work was also backed by Mike Layland, chair of the Worcester Cemeteries and Crematorium Forum who added: “I’ve been listening to feedback following the work, and every single comment I’ve received has been positive.

“Without doubt, what has been achieved is superb – the new facilities are really fit for purpose,” he added.

Improvements will be made to the Chapel’s customer reception area, its external canopy and to paving in the floral tribute area are the next areas to be addressed.

A new waiting room to the left of the Chapel entrance will also be created with the work expected to be completed in November.
