WORCESTER’S historic Cathedral is gearing up to host the draw for the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships on Friday.

The draw will reveal which teams will compete against each other at the Championships, being held at the University of Worcester Arena this summer.

The draw is open to members of the public, who are invited to come and witness one of the City’s most prestigious sporting events.

The event begins at 1.45pm and will finish at 3.30pm. In addition to the highly anticipated draw itself, the afternoon will be an opportunity to find out more about the European Championships, see a wheelchair basketball demonstration, and hear from some of Great Britain’s greatest players.

There will also be musical performances from local artists.

Mick Donovan, head of the University of Worcester’s institute of sport & exercise science, said: “The City of Worcester is preparing to play host to Europe’s largest wheelchair sport event of its kind and to welcome thousands of fans from across the continent and country.

“We hope people will come along and join us for the draw, which in itself will be an exciting spectacle.”

The Championships will take place between August 28 and September 6 at the University of Worcester Arena and qualifying places for the Rio Paralympics will be at stake, together with the European crown.

There will be no charge for the tickets, but due to great interest in this event interested parties are requested to apply by e-mailing [email protected] or call the University of Worcester Arena on 01905 544444.
