THE CITY’S historic cathedral will play host to the draw of one of the most prestigious sporting events to be staged in Worcester.

This year will see the Faithful City welcome many of the world’s best wheelchair basketball players when it hosts the European Championship later this year.

But before the event, which takes place between August 28 and September 6, can get underway at the University of Worcester, each of the 20 nations’ has to be put in a pool group.

This means Worcester Cathedral will be under the spotlight on Friday, January 30, when it stages the highly anticipated draw.

The event will see hundreds of leading figures from across the sporting world and region treated to a wheelchair basketball demonstration and the opportunity to hear from some of Great Britain’s greatest players.

The Very Rev Peter Atkinson, dean of Worcester, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to host this event at Worcester Cathedral.

“It may seem an unusual event to hold in a cathedral, but it is part of our commitment to the wider community to be open in this way. We wish the competitors all the best for the draw and competition.”

Prof David Green, vice chancellor and chief executive of the University of Worcester, added: “This will be a wonderful 12 days of sport.

“Over the last two years, the people of Worcester and the region have shown very strong support for our Great

British wheelchair basketball teams both when playing at the University of Worcester Arena and in the Invictus

Games. There is now a great appetite for this top flight European tournament.

“We look forward to welcoming all the players, officials and spectators from across Europe to Worcester in August and September.”
